May We Help: Engineering Independence for People with Disabilities
For individuals with disabilities, the right adaptive equipment can mean the difference between struggle and independence. However, finding or affording the perfect solution isn’t always easy. That’s where May We Help steps in—an organization dedicated to designing and building custom solutions that help individuals of all ages achieve mobility, access, and independence, all at no cost.
What is May We Help?
Based in the Greater Cincinnati area, May We Help is a nonprofit organization that connects individuals with disabilities to a network of over 140 talented volunteer engineers, designers, and craftsmen. These experts create one-of-a-kind adaptive devices tailored to a person’s specific needs. Whether it’s modifying an existing tool or building something entirely new, their goal is to ensure individuals can perform everyday tasks, explore hobbies, or even pursue passions like music and sports.
Since its founding, May We Help has expanded beyond Ohio, offering solutions to families in 23 states and three countries. Their focus is on developing devices that are not commercially available or modifying existing equipment when an off-the-shelf option doesn’t fully meet a person’s needs.
More Than Custom Builds: A Hub for Adaptive Equipment
Beyond their custom engineering work, May We Help collects and refurbishes adaptive equipment. At their weekly equipment events, individuals can browse donated pediatric and adult devices, receive expert guidance from physical therapists for proper fit and function, and even have modifications made on the spot in their in-house workshop.
Every piece of equipment is completely free. There are no financial requirements or obligations—just a mission to ensure everyone has access to the tools they need.
Community-Centered, Inclusive Events
May We Help also believes in bringing joy and accessibility to the community. Their annual Halloween and Tinker Toy Christmas with Santa events allow children to receive custom-built costumes that integrate with mobility equipment or adaptive toys designed specifically for their needs. These events celebrate inclusion and give families a chance to create lasting memories.
Making a Difference, One Solution at a Time
The impact of May We Help goes beyond just the devices they create—it’s about empowering individuals to live fuller, more independent lives. Whether designing a new adaptive tool, refurbishing donated equipment, or hosting inclusive events, this organization is driven by a powerful mission: to ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive. For more information on how to request a custom device, donate equipment, or attend an equipment event, visit May We Help’s website.
